Two Year Olds

At two years old, children are experiencing a whole new level and understanding of independence. They are beginning to understand themselves as separate from other people, grasp their place in the world and realize their actions affect objects and others.

Curriculum Goals

1. Self Care

  • Put on shoes and coat independently
  • Pour water into a glass
  • Wash hands independently
  • Begin toileting

2. Respect for Materials

  • Use materials in appropriate ways
  • Clean up toys

3. Routines

  • Participate at circle time
  • Transition when directed

4. Relationships

  • Connect with teacher(s) as a trusted adult
  • Engage in simple interactions with peers
  • Learn early social skills such as sharing and communication

5. Feelings

  • Begin to label own feelings, assert rights
  • Begin to recognize and label feelings in others
  • Begin work on conflict resolution, learn language of caring for others

6. Cognitive

  • Recognize colors and shapes
  • Recognize name in print
  • Begin to understand categorizing and grouping of similar objects
  • Begin to express observations of world around self
  • Establish an interest in learning new things

7. Language/Communication

  • Understand and follow 1-step directions
  • Begin to express ideas/thoughts in multiple word sentences
  • Answer questions
  • Develop a joy of reading

8. Motor Skills

  • Demonstrate basic locomotor skills (walking, running)
  • Manipulate objects with increasing control
  • Make several basic strokes with a writing utensil
