Our Environment

Our PlayHouse is located in the historic White Cross School, built in 1933. We have worked hard to maintain the authenticity of our charming schoolhouse. Abundant windows, hardwood floors, and inviting outdoor spaces are just a few of our school’s unique features. The White Cross School building has served the Chapel Hill/Carrboro community in a multitude of ways over the past eight decades. While our building has a long history, it has been completely updated and is compliant with all safety codes.

As a Reggio school, we view our environment as the third teacher, inviting children to explore and create in a comfortable, home-like setting. Open-ended materials such as wood, ramps, and recycled objects invite opportunities to experiment and problem solve. We have furnished the space with natural materials, keeping in tune with our desire to live an earth-friendly existence. Our curriculum encourages positive environmental practices such as composting, recycling, and gardening.

Children at Our PlayHouse use outdoor spaces to expand their learning through art, building, and science experiments. Daily opportunities to interact with plants, insects, and amphibians encourage us to respect and care for all living things. Unique water features, sandboxes, and digging areas provoke deeper connections with nature. At Our PlayHouse we believe messy projects can be learning projects, and we love to play in the dirt!
